It is so shocking that a journalist who is doing a documentary on peace and security will be killed by armed robbers

John Dramani Mahama - Former President of Ghana

Former president of Ghana and the 2020 flagbearer of NDC, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern about highway robberies and the recent killing of a UK journalist on the Tamale-Buipe-Kintampo Highway.

A statement from the office of the former president released yesterday indicated that HE John Mahama received with utter shock, the news of an attack on the Tamale-Buipe Road by armed robbers, leading to the murder of an international journalist.

Expressing dismay, the statement indicated how ironic it is that a journalist working on a documentary on peace and security to be killed from an incident of highway robbery which the office claims have become symptomatic of the violent crimes currently consuming the country.

“The new now rampant criminal activity of armed robbers in the northern parts of the country is a cause for great concern, as they are becoming a daily occurrence. In recent times, these armed robbers have become emboldened that they not only terrorize road users in the night but in the daytime as well,” a portion of the letter read.

Also, the statement from the former President’s Office indicated that during his “Thank you” tour of the five regions in the north, he met with chiefs, stakeholders, opinion leaders and religious leaders who mentioned insecurity on the highways as a key matter of concern.

The former commander-in-chief of the Ghana armed forces also indicated that despite the low morale of many police personnel due to the lack of adequate crime-fighting logistics, the Ghana Police Service remains one of the best in Africa and when given all support can secure our highways and ensure security for the people.

He further called on the government to take urgent steps to address the deteriorating security in the country.
