Pertaining to the political situation in Mali, groups and individuals who have been identified as making it difficult to bring the West African nation back to democratic rule have been appropriately sanctioned by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Travel bans and freezing of financial assets are some of the sanctions imposed on all members of the transitional authorities, the institutions and their family members as well.

The regional bloc in a communiqué after an extraordinary meeting in Accra on Sunday, November 7, 2021, explained that the sanctions are a result of the inability of the Malian authorities to meet the  February 2022 deadline for elections.

ECOWAS also sought the support of organizations like the African Union, the European Union, the United Nations, bilateral and other multilateral partners to endorse and implement the sanctions to the latter.

On  Guinea’s situation, authorities in charge of the transition were called on to urgently submit a detailed roadmap of activities to be carried out under the transition to aid the country to prepare for elections.

ECOWAS also indicated that sanctions earlier imposed on members of the military junta and their families were in full force until a constitutional rule is restored.

Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas has also been appointed by ECOWAS as a special envoy to Guinea.
