Covid-19 vaccine: an estimated 177,000 people to get Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine shot
Ghana Health Services begin administration of Johnson and Johnson Covid-19 vaccines in 11 districts in Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi
An estimated 177,000 people are expected to get their jab of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccines in two hotspot regions from today.
According to the Ghana Health Service all persons aged 18 years and above, with the exception of expectant mothers, are eligible for the vaccination in Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi, where the vaccination programme will be administered in about 123 centres.
However, the Ghana Health Service has indicated that preference would be given to people who are 60 years and above and those with underlying health conditions.
Manager of the Expanded Programme on Immunization, Dr Kwame Amponsa-Achiano, revealed that the administration of the current stock of 177,600 Johnson & Johnson single-shot vaccines would be done in 11 districts of concern in the two hotspot regions, adding that the exercise was expected to end on August 20, this year.
Also, there are 86 vaccination centres in seven selected districts in the Greater Accra Region. The districts are Ablekuma Central, Accra Metro, Adentan, Ga South, Kpone Katamanso, Okaikoi North and Tema Metro.
In the Greater Kumasi area, four districts have been selected and they include Asokwa, Kumasi Metro, Kwadaso and Oforikrom.
Dr Amponsa-Achiano said different deployment approaches would be used including the static and mobile approaches.
He stressed the point that the Johnson and Johnson vaccines were being administered strictly to those who had not taken any Covid-19 vaccines at all. That, Dr Amponsa-Achiano said, was because it was not medically advisable to mix vaccines for Covid-19.
“This is for those who have not taken any vaccines. Take along any national identity card,” he said.
Centres
Some selected health facilities in the Tema Metro where people could get their jabs are the Tema General Hospital, Bankuman CHPS Compound, Metro Health Directorate, Bethel Hospital, TMA Maternity & Children’s Clinic and Manhean Polyclinic.
Selected health facilities in the Okaikoi North District include Аbekа Ankam Medical Centre, Lapaz Community Hospital (Main), Prince of Peace Maternity Home, Fadama Mosque, Lapaz Market and Abeka Methodist Church.
The rest in the district are Nkordaasusua Pentecost Church, Opman Clinic, Al Ayar Hospital, Achimota Market, Abotare Royalgolden Age Clinic, Emmanuel Hospital, Education Directorate, Alogboshie CHPS Compound, C.A.C. CHPS Compound, Achimota Hospital, Midway Hospital, Lapaz Community Hospital (Annex), Achimota School Police Station, Kisseiman Market and Achimota Terminal Clinic.
In the Adentan District, the target group can also go to the Frafraha Health Centre, Botwe Health Centre, Gbentanaa Mobile Team, Ogbojo Polyclinic, Amrahia Health Centre, Adjiringanor Health Centre and the Amanfrom Health Centre.
Training
Ahead of the vaccination, the GHS has trained all vaccinators and other staff who would administer the jabs.
Dr Amponsa-Achiano said in the case of the Johnson & Johnson vaccines, the training was crucial because it was the first time the country was deploying the vaccine.
