College of Education teachers to embark on strike if government fails to pay them
If its requests for accrued bonuses are not met, the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) would go on strike action on Thursday, January 6, 2022.
In an interview on 3FM’s Sunrise on Monday, December 13, the National President, Prince Obeng-Hemah, explained that the government’s failure to keep its promises to them is the reason for their planned strike.
According to him, on September 24, 2020, CETAG and the government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding their service conditions for 2017 to 2020.
“The effective date for the implementation of the agreement was January 1, 2021, but this has not been done. We have been pushed to the wall,” Prince Obeng-Hemah stated.
Mr. Obeng-Hemah disclosed that the government was expected to authorize the payment of nine-month cumulative arrears in October, November, and December 2021, as per the arrangement “but government is yet to honour its promise in that regard”
“The month of October and November 2021 ended without any payment being made to the members of the Association.
“CETAG members are anxiously and patiently waiting for payment of the agreed allowances (January 2021 to December 2021) at the end of December 2021, without which the Association shall activate its intended strike action”.
“The intended strike action will involve all the 46 Colleges of Education under its watch, if their concerns are not addressed by the end of December 2021”, Mr. Obeng-Hemah stressed.
