Be united in your discourse – Freddie Blay advises MPs
The Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reiterated the need for Members of Parliament to be united when deliberating on issues in the House.
Parliament commenced 2021on a chaotic note when the House was voting to elect a new Speaker of Parliament and also unfortunately ended on a chaotic note following a brawl that ensued during a late-night session to consider the passing of the electronic transaction levy under a certificate of urgency.
Ghanaians have largely deemed such acts of the MPs in 2021 as embarrassing and shameful.
The NPP Chairman who is also a former Deputy Speaker admonished the lawmakers to keep the interest of the nation at heart whiles in the process of making laws.
“I will blame Parliament for what they want to consider as their rights, duties responsibilities, and the way they perceive it. It is for them to act together and give in a bit, so they all work together because united we stand, divided we fall. As a country, if we look at what happened in Parliament, we realize that we are giving in to wrong [things].”
Due to the hung nature of the current Parliament, members of the Majority and Minority sides of the eighth Parliament have had a number of disagreements in recent times.
In some instances, some MPs have been captured engaging in a brawl.
The most recent incident occurred on December 20, 2021, which has been widely condemned by various groups.
