Atebubu College students allegedly sent back home for failing to bring SRC prescribed plastic chairs
There is a growing turmoil at the Atebubu Presbyterian College of Education currently as some first-year students have reported being denied entry into the school until they bring along an SRC prescribed plastic chair.
In a communique issued on May 25, 2022, the SRC noted its efforts in ensuring that there is available water in the school for the students to use and asked that no student should keep a gallon in the dormitory for the purpose of water storage.
All freshers were also asked to submit their plastic chairs to their hall presidents before they will be handed the free mattresses available for them to use.
“Notwithstanding, the ceremonial chairs you were asked to buy, has called for a restructure of your registration into the various dormitories, that is, all mattresses would be in the custody of the hall presidents to who you are to submit your plastic chairs and receive your mattress the number of which will be recorded against your name,” part of the statement read.
Some students of the institution have allegedly been sent home by the leadership of the student body because they failed to come along with their plastic chairs.
A female student of the school said she was denied entry because she did not have a chair with her. According to her, an SRC executive has informed them that most of their colleagues have brought their chairs so the agitation of those who do not have the chairs will not change anything so they should either go and bring their chairs or stay away.
However, speaking to myactiveonline reporter, the SRC president of the college Atatogra Kafari Dickson Peter, he said they are not denying any student entry into the school. He explained that the SRC asked the students to bring the chairs because there are no chairs to be used for social activities unless the classroom furniture. However, the continuous movement of the furniture from the classrooms weakens them and shortens the lifespan of the chairs which has prompted his leadership to act fast to prevent any crisis due to the lack of chairs in the classrooms.
Though Mr Atatogra said the chairs are for social activities, an earlier statement from the SRC directing all first-year students to bring the prescribed chairs said it was due to an acute shortage of chairs in the school which was affecting teaching and learning.
“The SRC is informing all level hundred students through this communique to come along with a plastic chair(with metallic stand) each, as soon as first year second semester commences.
“The above notice is in connection with the acute shortage of chairs in the institution which decimates teaching and learning,” the statement noted.
According to Mr Atatogra, the chairs are part of the SRC levy the students are supposed to pay but because they asked to bring the chairs, they have deducted that away from the first-year student’s bill.
He also stated that no student has been sent home or will be sent home for not bringing the chair but they have resolved to collect the chairs from all the level 100 students and thus have instituted measures to do so. He said one of the options for students is to pay cash if they cannot bring the chairs. And those that also do not have money to pay will have the amount added to their next school fees meaning no student will be asked to go home because of the chair.
