Parliament’s Appointment Committee has in a unanimous decision approved the Special Prosecutor nominee, Kiss Agyebeng for approval. This follows his vetting by the Committee in Parliament during which he was made to answer several questions to test his capacity and integrity to handle the position.

The recommendation by the Committee now paves the way for a debate in Parliament to decide whether the nominee should be approved or not. If he is approved, he will be the second-ever person to occupy that role as the substantive Special Prosecutor following the resignation of his predecessor and Ghana’s first-ever Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu at the tail end of 2020.

Joe Osei Owusu, Chairman of the Appointment Committee speaking on his recommendation said, “we [will] put our recommendation [forward] for the House to determine whether to approve or disapprove of our recommendation. As to how other people view his [Kissi Agyebeng’s] answers, I’d rather leave it to them and stay within the rules to make recommendations to the House. The committee unanimously agreed to recommend him [Kissi Agyebeng] to the House for approval”.

On his part, the Special Prosecutor nominee, Kissi Agyebeng has admitted that he cannot fight corruption alone but assured he would make corruption unattractive.

“I am not naive to assume that I am coming to stop corruption. There’s no way I can stop corruption. God himself will not acclaim to that but, I am going to make corruption very costly to engage in.”

Kissi Agyebeng, a Criminal Law lecturer and Private legal practitioner was nominated as the replacement for former Attorney General and Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, who resigned in November 2020 before engaging the government in a negative banter of accusations. Mr Amidu announced his resignation in a long letter to the public chronicling various reasons such as inadequate funding to his office and the posture of the President towards the fight against corruption among others.
