Allow parents who can pay to support Free SHS – Presbyterian Church of Ghana to Akufo-Addo
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana has urged the government to allow parents who can afford to pay for their wards school fees to do so in support of the Free Senior High School programme.
Not discounting President Akufo-Addo’s strive to keep the Free SHS programme afloat the church notes with concern the economic situation in the country presently even as government seeks intervention from the International Monetary Fund.
“Your Excellency, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana is of the strong opinion that the state can shed off some of these costs for those who are capable of bearing them to do so because there are several parents who are capable and willing to contribute to the education of their children.”
The Church’s stance was contained in a communiqué released at the end of the 22nd General Assembly held between Wednesday, August 10 and Sunday, August 14 on the theme: ‘Christ in you, the Hope of Glory’.
Some of the issues that were discussed matters relating to corruption, economic hardships, perceived miscarriage of justice in the courts and other perceived or real deficits in the management of the state.
It lauded the government for fronting for the poor with pro-poor policies such as the Free SHS.
“For the government to have sacrificed many developmental needs to ensure that every child, without regard to economic background, can access secondary education is indeed laudable.”
The church pledged its commitment to the cause of the nation and said it “is committed to contributing its quota to the development of the nation…resolve to cooperate with the state in achieving the common aspirations of our people”.
And pledge its “holistic support for any noble effort geared towards promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the country.”
