Alert: 75 per cent of weapons used in crimes are imported
A worrying trend that has hit Ghanaians lately is the crime rate in the capital city not just that but the dangerous weapons the criminals wield that aid them to commit the crimes has come under scrutiny as well.
Especially when probing shows that 75% of the weapons the robbers use to carry out their activities lately are imported according to Mr Johnson Asante Twum, Deputy Director, Head of Programs at the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons.
This was revealed during a discussion on the spiralling crime rate in the capital city, especially in recent times.
Meanwhile “The Police records also point out to the fact that 80 per cent of all of the weapons used in the commission of crimes were locally made.
“We have over 75 per cent between 2017 and 2019, on the average, of all weapons used in the commission of crime being foreign-made weapons and we are looking at 24 plus per cent being locally made,” Mr Asante Twum said during an interview on Accra based Citi TV Monday, September 27.
However, the Ghana Police Service in their resolve to curb this menace arrested one Bukari Salifu, who is said to be one of the kingpins that provide weapons to armed robbers for their expeditions.
Bukari Salifu’s arrest was effected over the weekend following Police intelligence.
Prior to his arrest, two suspected robbers who had been arrested when they attempted to rob motorists of their belongings along the Koluedor-Sege-Accra road had confessed that Bukari Salifu was the one who provides them with weapons to carry out their robberies.
