Akufo-Addo is managing the Free SHS program very poorly – Mahama
Former President Mahama has said the manner in which the Free Senior High School program is being run is not the right way to go. He stated during an interview on TV3 that he is not impressed with it so far while adding that “it is not being run efficiently”.
He said, “there is a problem with quality, infrastructure, feeding and a whole lot with this programme”.
Mr Mahama reiterated reasons why he has always called for a progressive running of the programme till it gets to a stage where its tentacles are expanded.
The government could have commenced the program with a particular target of those who are poor and really cannot afford the fees but chose to be populist.
“You cannot just start such a program like that but because of politics they chose to be populist, he explained.
The former president then pointed out what the headmasters and mistresses of the various second-cycle schools are going through so much because of the program. “Go ask a headmaster if it is working he will tell you it is not, ” he stated.
President Akufo-Addo launched the government’s flagship free Senior High School policy on 12th September 2017 at the West Africa Senior High School Adenta Accra, targeted at making Senior High School education accessible to all.
But five years on, the policy has been plagued with so many issues with some stakeholders calling for a review.
