A D7 should not stop a student from accessing University education – Kofi Asare
Mr Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of African Education Watch supports the directive to universities to admit students with grade D7.
He said in an interview that, it makes no sense for students with D7 in Mathematics and B2 or even a better grade in French to be denied admission to read French because their pass in Maths is weak.
“A student wants to specialize in French and you say that you need a minimum of C6 in Mathematics. It does not make sense because there’s no correlation between french and a D7 in Mathematics. One will not be able to make it to any university if they had D7 mathematics, it does not make sense. In fact, D7 is a pass according to assessment body.” Mr Asare said.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Education Minister gave a directive to Universities when he was giving a speech at the inauguration of Governing councils of some public technical universities. He urged Universities to create programmes accessible to students with grade D7 in core subjects.
“Our gross tertiary enrollment ratio is 18.8%, South Korea is 73.6%, so no nation has been able to show transformation without hitting 40 to 50% tertiary enrollment ratio”
He further explained that D7 shouldn’t be a barrier for students who want to further their education in the University. Universities should start looking at diploma programmes where students with grade D7 will have access to enter into their institution.
