4 students in Police grips, Bolga and Bawku Technical Institutes shut down
Two Senior High Schools in the Upper East Region have been shut down by the Regional Security Council following riots in both schools. The students are to report from home to write the ongoing WASSCE.
Four students of the Bolgatanga Technical Institute are in the grips of the police following riots at the school on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, August 2, 2022, the four male students were apprehended for rioting and alleged possession of leaked examination papers.
A source from the police revealed that the suspects are being held in their custody for further investigations and possible prosecution. The source did not, however, state when the police will commence prosecution.
Interestingly, no arrest was made at the Bawku Technical Institute, where students also rioted and vandalized school property.
At the Bolgatanga Technical Institute the students rioted to demand the release of a teacher and a National Service personnel who were arrested by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for allegedly leaking an examination paper, while at Bawku Technical Institute, students rioted because school authorities were strict on them not to engage in examination malpractice.
Both schools have currently been shut down by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) led by the Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu upon advice from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and management of the schools.
Mr Yakubu instructed that all final year students writing the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Examination will only come to school to write their papers and immediately leave back home.
All students left their respective schools by 4:00 pm on Monday, August 1, 2022. It is however, unclear when the two schools will recall the students.
