29-year-old Takoradi woman given 6 years jail term to deter others from faking kidnappings
The 29-year-old woman arrested recently in Takoradi in the Western Region for allegedly faking her kidnapping has been given a six-year jail term with hard labour.
Joana Krah was charged with deceiving a public officer and publication of fake news.
She confessed to faking her kidnapping on Friday, October 22, 2021, to extort GH₵5,000 from a relative.
This comes in the wake of an earlier fake kidnap case currently pending at the Takoradi circuit court.
In that first case, according to a press release from the Police dated September 23, 2021, the missing but found Josephine Panyin Mensah was not pregnant. The release said that upon thorough checks on the woman at the hospital, medical experts have disclosed that the woman was never pregnant within the period of her kidnap.
The accused person during interrogation disclosed to the Police that she had her antenatal periods at a hospital in Takoradi called European Hospital but medical records at the facility suggest that the lady visited the hospital without any pregnancy in this period.
However, the recent case which led to the imprisonment of Joana Krah involved two other persons; Susana Awortwe, aged 27, and Francis Eshun, aged 27 who allegedly conspired with the now convict to fake her kidnap and demanded a ransom of Five-Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHS5,000.00) from her adopted father.
She pleaded guilty in court yesterday, Monday and was thus sentenced today by the Takoradi Harbour Circuit Court A presided over by his honour Micheal Ampadu.
Nevertheless, three persons were also arrested by the Police for questioning on the possible conspiracy charges.
