Mavis Hawa Koomson - Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Hon Hawa Koomson has told fishmongers in Nzema East Municipality whose wares were seized by their assemblies inspectorate unit that they will not be compensated.

Her reasons are that they were told not to sell the carcass of the dolphins that were washed ashore. And also, those dolphins were endangered species so they were not supposed to take them to the market for sale but they did not heed the advice but went ahead to do it despite it being illegal.

The minister made this statement during a working visit to the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region during her tour of the region.

Municipal Chief Executive for Nzema East Hon Frank Okpenyen also added that they had to launch an “operation search every kitchen campaign” to seize all those dead dolphins from most of the traders’ kitchens.

He also said he has collaborated with neighbouring municipalities to seize other dead dolphins left in their kitchens.
