Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah tours water treatment plants

Madam Cecilia Dapaah, the minister responsible for Sanitation has labelled illegal miners as nation wreckers as she calls on law enforcement agencies to deal with those found culpable.

Her tour of the Offin Abompe river in the Atwima Mponua district in the Ashanti Region got her pumped up, prompting her to call on law enforcement agencies to drastically deal with them.

She backed Ghana Water Company Limited’s complaints that the activities of the illegal miners have made the treatment of water difficult.

She complained about how the activities of these illegal miners have caused the cost of production to increase for the GWCL coupled with reduced volumes of water reaching the company which has led to water rationing.

“We have realized of late that the cost of producing water is going higher, and it is like there’s no end. That is why we are joining forces as a matter of duty with stakeholders like the chiefs, the youth, and legal small-scale miners to make sure we are all on one page as well as religious leaders to make sure we preserve our heritage; meaning our environment, our lands, and our water resources. It is our duty. National Security says see something say something, we are adding do something,” she said.

The dire consequences of having to import water await the country if nothing is done to curb the menace, Managing director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Ing Clifford Braimah has cautioned.

Residents and opinion leaders of the Bedabo community were encouraged by the Minister and her entourage to assist in stopping the activities of illegal miners.
