Police in Upper East Region deny escorting smuggled fertilizer to Burkina Faso

Fertilizer being transported in a long truck

Police in the Upper East Region has said a publication on July 19, 2021, that their men escorted smuggled fertilizer belonging to the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ)  to Burkina Faso is false.

The Herald Newspaper had reported that its sources say every day dozens of long vehicles are seen conveying subsidised fertilizer meant for the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs programme to the francophone country under Police escort.

“Pictures and videos in the possession of this outlet saw numerous long vehicles exporting the commodity through the Kulungugu border exit to Burkina Faso on a daily basis,” the publication had said.

However, Police say the publication is fake and calculated to tarnish the image of the Ghana Police Service, as the Police have not escorted any truck across any border in the Upper East region.

“The Police cherish the role of the media in the fight against crime and therefore appeal to media practitioners, especially Reporters of The Herald Newspaper to verify the information before publication,” a Police statement said.
