‘We cannot swallow any employment freeze in the education sector’ – Kofi Asare

The Executive Director of Education think tank, Africa Education Watch has stated that going back to the International Monetary Fund, IMF for a financial bailout to support Ghana’s ailing economic condition is not an option.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, Mr. Asare argued that “We cannot swallow any employment freeze in the education sector. It will worsen the teacher deficit in rural public basic schools”.

According to him “an E-levy in its current form is also unacceptable; It will hurt and impoverish the poor. Our leaders must think outside the box. There are no quick fixes to this collateral mess. Tax momo & bank transfer charges; don’t tax the transfers. And review the extractives tax regime”.

“It’s sad our economy has been mismanaged into debt unsustainability levels, but IMF can’t be an option,” Kofi Asare.

We cannot swallow any employment freeze in the education sector. It will worsen the teacher deficit in rural public basic schools.

An E-levy in its current form is also unacceptable; It will hurt and impoverish the poor. Our leaders must think outside the box. There are no quick fixes to this collateral mess. Tax momo & bank transfer charges; don’t tax the transfers. And review the extractives tax regime.

Even if we are able to raise 6b/year, we risk coming back to this stage by Jan 2024 if we continue spending recklessly on freebies.

The town hall meetings are not different from one between a choirmaster and his choiristers. We are wasting fuel. Stop the theatric! We play too much.

I hear Uncle Ken has cut the budget by 20% for Q1. Sounds good but which expenditure lines were affected, and does it include the wasteful teacher trainee’s allawa? I hope it did not affect my Ghana School Feeding Programme earmarked to cover all primary schools this year?

We need to know where exactly the cuts affected. Kindly tag the Finance Minister and his team for us. Tell them they missed a call from the classroom.

As for IMF, no, no, no! These children’s education will be commodified by IMF conditionalities.
