commercial buses parked at a lorry station

Episode 8

“Last two! Last- Sule! Sule! Hey Sule!”

Red was calling for his set of last passengers when he caught sight of the elusive station tomboy. Since that incident at the police station with Boom, Red has yet to set eyes on her. Until today that is.

“Sule! Sule!!”

Determined not to lose sight of her, Red followed the sneaky Sule around whichever parked bus she dodges between.

“Sule la! Oh”

Finally tired of the impromptu hide-and-seek game Sule turned tired and frustrated eyes at the annoying mate.

“Oh you too, what!”

Red did not know what to make of this. Sule hardly raises her voice. Believes more in walking the walk. Action speaks louder, has always been Sule’s watchword

“Your face scarce for the station inside, why ibe so?”

“So, is it your business?”

“Why you dey hide from Boom?”

For the first time since the meeting, Red could have bargained his mother’s favourite leather sandals (though that was her only pair at the moment until he can send her a new set), that Sule looked like she was about to cry. Well, that was before she adjusted her cap and looked back at him making him think of needing new glasses for a possibly finishing sight.

‘What is your business?”

“What you mean? Ibe all our business!”

Gesturing at the station, the frustrated mate ran a palm down his face and turned to look at Sule properly. She has lost considerable weight but then she has always been on the slim side.
Frustrated, Red tried to understand. He has never seen Sule being this way. People hide from Sule and not the other way around. Now Boom said something to Sule that is making her hide.

“See Red, make”9

Red! oye s3k3 aloo? You can’t see the time, you better reach that bus before I reach it.

Watching Massa disappear around the bus behind them, he turned back to say something to Sule. Only, there was no Sule.

Stupid girl, he muttered running in the direction of his master. Didn’t she know he was just trying to help?

Red, your master dey inside? Naa watched as the brooding mate sat on a bench in the front row waiting to be served his turn of hot kenkey. But Naa hesitated, it is really unusual for Red to ignore her presence in this manner but then a certain other girl occupied the young man’s thoughts so much so that for the first time, he did not accord his girl her usual ballad of praises.

Abeg bring my food oh!

Am coming.

Feeling unhappy the young woman brought his food just the way he liked it and even added an extra head of fish but either Red failed to notice her effort or did not care.
Are you seeing another girl?

Red clutched his chest at the pepper going down the wrong channel as he tried easing the sharp pains with consistent bouts of coughs. Snatching the sachet of water held out to him, he glared into the guilty face of his girlfriend.

Obláyô gbemi oh!

Oh, Red mini? It was not intentional la. Sorry, but what do you expect after your behaviour?

If ibe die wey I die rydhere noor you go tell my body sorry ona?

Am sorry now, I go give you extra fish. Plus extra kenkey

Her aunty will kill her if she finds out, but anything to bring back the Red she knows not this stranger Red.

You know where Sule dey?

It was now Naa’s turn to choke on spittle gone the wrong pipe.

“Red!”

“Oh mini?”

You like Sule now eh?

Angrily Naa took away his meal leaving him staring at the table that was occupied a moment ago and wondering what he did wrong.
“Naa! eno be so la!”

But then she continued walking away with the earthenware.

“Women”

Muttering more expletives, Red got up to leave. Moodier than he had been when he arrived.
