The chairman of Ghana’s largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress,  Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has brought his re-election campaign activities to a temporal halt.

His decision is due to the demise of his mother Madam Mary Gyawubea Badu at the Koforidua Regional Hospital on Monday 31st October 2022 at age 84.

Mr Ampofo who is the incumbent chairman is in a hot race to remain the leader with very strong competition from the long-serving General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.

In announcing the passing of his mother on his Facebook page, the experienced politician referred to her as the matriarch and rock of the family.

To enable him and his family to mourn the woman that has greatly impacted their lives he decided to suspend all campaign activities.

He expressed appreciation to all those who have reached out to express their condolences to him and his family in these difficult times.

Dear Comrades, it is with a heavy heart that I write to announce the passing of the matriarch and rock of my family, my dear mother, Madam Mary Gyawubea Badu. In one of the darkest moments in my life and that of my family, I am not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our hearts. In view of this, I am temporarily suspending all campaign activities as together with the rest of the family, we reflect and mourn the passing of the woman who shaped our very beings.

On behalf of my family and I, I thank all those who have reached out to us with encouragement and those who have spared thoughts and prayers in these very difficult times.

Let’s keep hope alive.
