As discussions are still ongoing about the ongoing national consultative forum on small scale mining, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs ) are doubting the President’s will to fight the canker.

They believe the perfect example he can set to prove his political will to fight illegal mining is to first punish people in his government who engage in the act.

Another factor that makes CSOs doubt Akufo-Addo’s resolve is how he fared in the previous attempt. His below-par performance in the previous attempt tempts CSOs to disbelieve him and also brand this forum as another talk shop.

Chairman of the Civil Society Platform on oil and gas, Dr Steven Manteaw also emphasized that there is the need to sanction government officials engaging in the act of illegal mining. “Until that is done, ideas from this forum will not go anywhere,” he stated.

On the part of the media, the President of the Ghana Journalist  Association, Affail Monnie said it is time for the media to adopt the fishing out approach to name and shame the culprits of such acts.
