In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has temporarily closed down the Akro Senior High Technical School (ASHTECH) in the Eastern Region for two weeks over security concerns.

Emmanuel Asiedu Acheampong, the Ghana Education Service Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO), says pupils will return to school on Monday, February 7, 2022.

“As they resumed, they were writing their promotional examinations. The condition is such that we can’t allow them to continue writing their exams. So officially the Director General’s office in consultation with the Ministry of Education has given the go-ahead to allow them go home in the meantime. They would be back on February 7, 2022, to continue with their examinations and academic work.”

He asked the students to be law-abiding.

“We expect the student to learn to not take the laws into their own hands. Anything that worries or bothers them either academically or security-wise should be reported to the appropriate authorities to be managed.”

On Sunday morning January 23, 2022, the Eastern Regional Ghana Education Service Director, Magret Ansah Asamoah, Lower Manya Municipal Security Council, and school management according to 3news.com convened at the school to have a crisis meeting and announce the decision to temporarily close the school.

Following a retaliatory attack by residents on Saturday, January 22, 2022, several of the students had left home for fear of their lives.

After two of the suspects broke into the girls’ room at midnight, one was lynched in the school.

The case has been reported to the police and In the meantime, the school’s security has been bolstered.

“There would be security presence until everything normalised,” the Eastern Regional GES Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Asiedu, stated.

The Arko Senior High Technical School is not completely enclosed, leaving it vulnerable to burglars and stray animals, as well as providing a security risk.

Currently, the school has about 1,000 students enrolled in both residential and day second and third years.

Residential students who were left on campus were escorted by police to Accra, Koforidua, Asesewa, and the surrounding areas.

It will be recalled that one person was reported dead and a second in critical condition after they were attacked by students of Akro Senior High and Technical School (ASHTECH) at Odumase in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The death has, however, led to a reprisal attack from the youth of Odumase Krobo.

On Saturday afternoon, the youth pelted stones at the students.

Report from the Odumase Krobo police says on Friday, January 21, at about 10:30 pm, they received information from the headmaster of the Akro Secondary Technical School that two suspects had invaded the girls’ dormitory of the school.

They were, subsequently, apprehended and beaten by the students.

The police arrived at the school and found the two suspects in an unconscious state.

One died upon arrival at the St. Martin De Pores Hospital while the other suspect in critical condition is receiving care at the same hospital.

This, when the youth of the community heard, provoked them to attack the school on Saturday.
