‘Guru didn’t listen to advice, Pope Skinny acts funny’ – Artist manager reveals secrets
The evening of Friday 12th November 2021 saw a cheerful audience in the premises of Active TV during its 2nd edition of the Active Edutainment Show, the AE Show.
Computer Scientist cum Project Manager now turned professional Artist Manager, Esther Konama who has managed some artists like Guru NKZ, Ara B, Pope Skinny, Kwesi Swat but now currently overseeing the career of Abokyi, has revealed some secrets between her and her artists that led to their breakup.
In an interview with Ruby King Sedi, the host of the show, Esther was asked about her relationship with all the artists she has worked with, which she said “Working with Pope Skinny was somewhat cool even though he at times acts funny and consistency [sic] was his problem. Guru didn’t listen to advice and wanted to do all things by himself. I am cool with Abokyi now but Kwesi Swat was stubborn”.
She explained that Kwesi Swat was the type when you tell him to do this, he will be doing something different. Hence she described him as stubborn just like Guru NKZ.
The former Guru NKZ manager added that she is someone that does not condone proudness nor stubbornness from her artist, so if you are hers and you behave otherwise, she will just terminate your contract with her.
“Artist management requires a lot and is a tough job so working with [an] artist who does not listen to you and wants to do all things by himself makes the work difficult. I will simply terminate your contract if you are stubborn because if you are a stubborn artist you cannot work with me,” she said.
Esther added that some Artists are not willing to learn and that if you are not willing to learn, there’s no way she can help you.
She advised artists and managers that in all things, they need consistency. “You need to be consistent and focused in everything you do”.
Having said these, she concluded that her new act, Abokyi is someone who has been with her for a long time, and for all these years she sees Abokyi as the sober type, who is open to advice and also ready to learn. She added that she sees the relationship with Abokyi to go far since he is the calm type.
