Ghanaians to soon pay 30 to 40% more for transport as GPRTU plans increment

Transport fares will be upwardly adjusted by about thirty or forty per cent, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union has revealed, following the tricking down effect of the fuel price hikes.

Negotiations on this decision are set to commence on Tuesday. Mr Godfred Abuldire, General Secretary of the union stated that the price hikes and other determinants have triggered their demands.

“By Tuesday, we are going to begin our negotiations. We are going to begin our negotiations with the forecast or reports that we have gotten and from there, we will know by what margin [we will increase transport fares].”

He insisted that any increase below 30 per cent would hurt the sector.

Some fuel pumps have started selling petrol at around GH¢13.10 while diesel is selling at GH¢15.99.

Analyst project that there will be further increment in gas as well as the demand increases during the winter period.

Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security, for example, projects that petrol prices could hit as high as GH¢17 per litre.

Transport fares were upwardly adjusted in May 2022 to twenty per cent. When transport fares were increased in  May 2022, petrol and diesel were selling at a national average of GH¢9.41 and GH¢11.12.
